Ecological economics (ran 2020–21, 2021–22)

The purpose of the module was to explore the developing area of ecological economics, in order to:

  1. understand the philosphy and perspective that ecological economics offers (and to identify the different subsets of ideas within ecological economics as a whole);
  2. relate the development of ecological economics to the wider critique of neoclassical economics;
  3. develop understanding of the systematic interactions between ecology, social systems and economics that emerges from ecological economics;
  4. recognise the policy imperatives and practical applications that emerge from such a perspective and explore the possibilities for solutions and responses to the causes and consequences of climate change.

The module sought to reflect and engage with the economic and policy context that underpins the widening public recognition of environmental matters and explored such aspects through the learning materials and seminar/lab programme.
